New Godzilla Movie Gets Another Writer

While Legendary Pictures hired Gareth Edwards (Monsters) to direct their new Godzilla film they didn't have an official writer. There was word that David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Blade, Dark Knight Rises) and David Callaham were working on a drafts. Now there is confirmation from HeatVision that newcomer Max Borenstein will now work on the script.

Gareth Edwards To Direct Godzilla For Legendary Pictures

HeatVision reports that Monsters writer/director Gareth Edwards is close to closing a deal with Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros. to helm and co-write their reboot of Godzilla. Gareth Edwards gained praise for his film Monsters which he wrote and directed himself. He also worked on the film's special effects on his laptop.

Darren Aronofsky Jokingly Teases Interest In Godzilla Remake

Collider found a quote from the director which sort of teases him contemplating the Godzilla reboot. A journalist asked Aronofsky whether he would like to remake Frankenstein or Godzilla one day. He very well was joking but he answered remaking the king of the monsters.

 “Why is that so funny? That’s all I ever wanted to do – remake Godzilla.”

When it comes to Darren Aronofsky I never say never. He is still hopeful to remake Robocop some day along with his Lone Wolf & Cub (Shogun Assassin) film. The latter I think he'll get out of his system with the samurai/ninja filled production of The Wolverine. With MGM getting back on it's legs Robocop is still possible. He's also been offered directing gigs on both Batman (pre-Nolan) and Superman. While Godzilla seems a very unlikely choice for a director of his caliber he must have grown up on the extensive library of Godzilla films like myself and others. It's also not that unbelievable since the studio is rumored to be looking for a writer/director to take on the project.

Previously there had been a bit of confusion when Legendary Pictures (the same studio that is making the Godzilla reboot) bought another monster-based project Pacific Rim from screenwriter Travis Beacham (Clash of The Titans). Later when Pacific Rim was rumored to be offered to Guillermo del Toro along with the film being re-tooled into the Godzilla project.  Guillmero went on the record denying any involvement with Godzilla.

“I am not involved in ‘Godzilla’ at all,” Guillermo replied once I’d explained the rumor to him.  “I haven’t read it or plan to read it.  Nor have I been approached to direct it.”

Godzilla Reboot Update

There hasn't been much movement on the new Godzilla reboot which is setup at Legendary Pictures. Yet producer Brian Rogers (via ScreenRant) has some words that should reassure fans who felt Sony butchered the King of The Monsters back in 1998. He confirms that we'll be be seeing the big green guy facing other monsters instead of soldiers. Since the project is aiming for a 2012 release we should be hearing more information on who will direct and if any known actors will have roles in the coming months.

“In all the conversations we had with Legendary [Pictures], they made it clear that they want to pay homage to the traditional Godzilla character and they did not want to make the same decisions that Sony did which was taking the whole character and…it became more of an iguana-like character, laying eggs,” he explained. “They wanted to go back to the history of the project, but again because it’s a reboot, bring it into the 21st century and do a project that was current and exciting to the audience… Similar to what Legendary did with ‘Batman.’”

“I think I can safely say that there will be another monster or monsters that Godzilla will fight. I think traditionally those are kind of situations that the fan base wants to see. In the original Sony version, in my opinion, not having another monster that they were fighting, was a drawback and not an asset. And just having Godzilla fight the US army was not in the same spirit of the character.”
