Dum Dum Dugan In Captain America 2 & Nick Fury Film?

Recently Neal McDonough was speaking with IAmRogue (via CBM) about his future with Marvel Studios. He mentioned the possibility of showing up in Captain America 2. Being featured in either flashbacks or present day scenes. Neal goes even further and mentions possibilities to include him in the Nick Fury film which has been mentioned since the first Iron Man. Saying the film could be set in the 60's or 70's.

"Yeah the talk now is that they are going to flashback to WWII and without going to much into, because I’m not supposed to say too much at all, but whatever they do I guarantee you this … it’s going to be an awesome movie. The villain is going to be crazy, and it will be really terrific. The origin of Cap being in WWII is definitely paramount to the guys over at Marvel."

"In the origin with Dum Dum, he got a small portion of the super serum himself and he was actually the head of S.H.E.I.L.D. until four or five years ago. So he aged really slowly. He aged quicker than Nick and quicker than Steve Rogers did but he aged quite slowly. He was chronologically frozen him self for ten years. So there are all kinds of stuff that I’ve read in the comic books but who knows how they’re going to do it. I know they are going to go back to WWII in Cap 2. You know in flashbacks but past that I’m not sure. Also what would make me happier than a pig in poop would be to be part of and see Sam Jackson as a ‘60s or ‘70s version of Nick Fury. That would just be awesome. Hopefully we’ll get that one done soon. I know Sam is very excited about it."

In a separate interview with ABC News (via CBM) Neal stated that again he would be alongside Samuel L. Jackson in a Fury movie.

"Oh yeah, Cap 2 is in the works. The script is written and hopefully we will go into production fairly soon. I'm really looking forward to the Nick Fury films. Sam Jackson and myself will be partners in that one. And I know Sam is really excited about doing it. So fingers crossed we start that one up pretty soon."

His character does get exposed to a different super soldier formula known as the infinity formula. That ends up slowing down his aging along with Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos in the comics. If the studio wants more period pieces perhaps focusing on the Cold War in the Fury film or having flashbacks of the Howlers fighting a numerous amount of war campaigns the infinity formula is a good way to do it. It's unknown if Marvel is going to use this avenue but it would be a science fiction way to include the Howling Commandos in present day films.

Screengrabs From Avengers Teaser Trailer

Samuel L. Jackson Confirms New Female Sidekick, Appearences In Cap & Thor

On Jimmy Fallon Avenger's actor Samuel L. Jackson who plays Nick Fury confirmed he was filming scenes for Thor and Captain America. He also confirmed an old rumor that there would be another female character. As he's going to be test-screening with five actresses for the role of his 'side-kick". Jackson also mentions that the start time on the production is April. Likely pushed back to contend with Robert Downey Jr.'s shooting of Sherlock Holmes 2. There have been a few actresses linked to Avengers and a few possible roles to fill. I'll run down these below.

"I'm Nick Fury, I've done two of [these films] already. In the next month or so I've got to do one day [of filming] on THOR and one day on CAPTAIN AMERICA. I have no idea what they want me to do in [them]. Then in April we start on THE AVENGERS.

"I have to screen-test five actresses on Friday. They have this new character that's like my sidekick, she's with me all the time."

While nobody has been able to confirm these actresses yet. I assume one of the trades will hear something over the weekend. One name that keeps coming back to the rumor-mill is Alice Eve. She tested for the role of Peggy Carter and has been linked for Avengers for months now. Malin Akerman and Rachel Nichols (G.I. Joe, Conan) were also included with the same rumor. Yet Malin seems more likely to pursue the role of Lois Lane in Superman. Sundance it-girl Brit Marling (Another Earth) was teased by Clark Gegg (Agent Coulson) during the Sundance Festival. As he Tweeted he was trying to recruit her for Avengers. He later re-Tweeted he was joking but it still seems possible. As Marvel is known for hiring up and coming actors like they did with Chris Hemsworth for Thor. Of course this role could be for a completely different group of actresses.

So what could this role be? There are many possibilities which include SHIELD agents Sharon Carter, Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel), Barbara Morse (Mockingbird) or Maria Hill. The sidekick part of Jackson's quote makes me believe the role they are casting is Maria Hill.

How Marvel Should Approach The SHIELD Film: PART VI [Nick Fury]

In this installment I'll be covering both Nick Fury and what I'd like to see in the SHIELD film itself. While the other solo films will likely be contemporary the Fury film could be open-ended jumping between both present time and WWII events. Of course unless this aspect of Fury's life is told in Captain America it's likely we could also be introduced to the Howling Commandos.

FURY: I would hope tht Fury film would actually be set during WWII. I doubt this will happen because of the cost of period film. Yet I doubt we'll see enough of the WWII era characters in Captain America. It's expected that Rogers will be the focus of the movie. Mainly I'd like to see the Howling Commandos fighting Nazis and HYDRA. Even if it's only in the introduction of opening credits I'd like to see the on screen origin of Fury. From there on I don't really mind seeing Nick's adventures in the present. My only problem with Nick Fury solo film is that it could negate the purpose of having a SHIELD film. If I had a say the Fury origin would be included into the SHIELD film itself.

SHIELD: Super prisons and the helicarrier should be present if they aren't already shown in Avengers. I'd also like to see SHIELD still portrayed as the ghost-like organization covering their tracks at all costs. I'm not too concerned about cameos I could careless if Cap, Thor, Banner or Stark show up in the film. To be honest I feel anyone but Rogers showing up could be distracting to the audience. Giving the impression this is another Avengers film which it shouldn't be. I do however believe that new characters like Black Panther and Iron Fist should be considered. HYDRA should be the big baddie of the film and should be hellbent on world domination/destruction. Extensive futuristic technology and weapons should also be used perhaps provided by Stark Industries.

MOVIE INFLUENCES: Depending on what time periods the story takes place. The contemporary scenes I'd like to see something like True Lies. If Fury or SHIELD ends up using more WWII events I'd expect references to movies like The Dirty Dozen, Saving Private Ryan, Kelly's Heroes and Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. While Captain America is taking more cues from films like Indiana Jones and The Rocketeer. I expect the Fury origin could be a little more gritty and exploitative in nature.

Jackson Hints Fury Origin In Captain America?

In a bonus feature from the Iron Man 2 DVD/Blu Ray focusing on Nick Fury. Actor Samuel L. Jackson talks about his place in the Marvel universe in the video and mentions his age. He said: "My relationship with his father [Howard Stark]....How old I actually am". This gets me thinking that Fury could very well get his origin told in Captain America. Sam has already been confirmed to be starring in the film. Yet all that's been confirmed is that they would be contemporary bookend scenes. It's expected the scenes would show the discovery and thawing of a frozen Rogers by Fury. Leading to Cap's recruitment into SHIELD and the Avengers. Fury while fighting with the Howling Commandos during WWII was seriously injured and given the Infinity Formula helping him heal fast. The side effect of the serum was that his aging was significantly slowed. It's been confirmed by director Joe Johnston that some of the Howling Commandos will appear. Best friend and fellow Commando Dum Dum Dugan will be in the film played by Neal McDonough (Band of Brothers). His relationship with Tony's father Howard could also play out in the film since Stark will be providing gadgets and tech for the heroes. You never know they very well could be saving this for the Nick Fury film.

Ant-Man Vs Nick Fury: Battle For 2012

2011 is going to be an exciting year for Marvel Studios it will see their fourth and fifth films released. Even more exciting is that they'll be aiming for two more releases the following year. One of the films being the anticipated Avengers. The other is unknown but we do know Marvel could be planning on releasing it a few months before the Avengers. The options seem like it's down to Edgar Wright's Ant-Man or the Nick Fury film starring Samuel L. Jackson.

Of course there has been talk of Iron Man 3 being in development but I think Robert Downey Jr. is going to want a rest between Sherlock Holmes 2 and Avengers. Along with director Jon Favreau being busy with Cowboys & Aliens and no script in place for the third installment. To setup Avengers they might need a film to focus on Dr. Hank Pym or one showcasing the history of Nick Fury. So that audiences have previous knowledge of these characters. The other Marvel films could include Incredible Hulk 2, War Machine, Black Widow and Hawkeye. The Hulk sequel could be on hold if director Louis Leterrier gets to direct Avengers. From what I know the other spin-offs aren't in active development.

ANT-MAN

Edgar Wright and co-writer Joe Cornish (Tintin) have completed the second draft of the script. Wright is in post-production of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World with a release date in August. So he'll be free to start pre-production on Ant-Man in September. Holding the film back is that Edgar has many other film projects in development which include Baby Driver and World's End. I expect since Edgar has been involved with Ant-Man since 2004 and producer Kevin Feige being vocal of the film it could possibly be next. It goes without saying after Scott Pilgrim is released people will be dying to see Wright's Ant-Man film.

Ant-Man will more than likely focus on a story blending the characters of Dr. Hank Pym and Scott Lang. It will be interesting to see if they'll incorporate the many different hero personas Pym (Yellow Jacket/Wasp/Giant Man/Goliath) develops for himself and wife Janet (The Wasp and Giant Girl). Pym and Janet are of founding members of The Avengers and it would seem appropriate to include them in the film.

NICK FURY/SHIELD

To expand the world of SHIELD it's obvious that Marvel will have to establish the agency and the people working behind the scenes. Samuel L. Jackson is set to star which is included in his massive deal with Marvel Studios. Fury is the one getting all the heroes together for the Avengers. I'm sure his film could finally reveal to us why they need to join and it could develop the major threat for Avengers. I see the Fury film being the bridge between the other Marvel films and characters.

While they haven't announced a director or supporting cast they have hired Andrew W. Marlowe to write the film. Marlowe previously wrote Air Force One, End of Days and Hollow Man.

The assumption is that we could see Clark Gregg in the film reprising his role of SHIELD agent Colson. There had been rumors that Kate Mara could be playing another agent in Iron Man 2. Some of the most recognizable agents include Dum Dum Dugan, Sharon Carter and Maria Hill. They could appear alongside other established heroes like Black Widow and War Machine. I'm sure they'll be able to finally bring Hawkeye into the mix as well. It's been previously stated we will see the SHIELD Helicarrier used in the film which Stark builds for the government.

FINAL THOUGHTS

While I believe both films could be vying for the second summer 2012 release date its more than two years away. Avatar and Sherlock Holmes are proving that December is becoming the new blockbuster release month. I could see one of the films being released in March 2012 and the other early December 2011. I also don't think it's all that bad if they release Ant-Man after Avengers in July. While it could be interesting to see Hank and Janet in Avengers it might become too bloated with heroes. I'm sure Marvel could hold a few characters back for Avengers 2.
