Who Should Direct The Superman Reboot?
Warner Bros. has been trying it's best to find the best way to bring Superman back to theaters. The balance of pleasing fans of the comics and bringing in new audiences is tricky. With the possible involvement of Christopher Nolan they could be closer to closing that gap. The only issue is who would be able to successfully direct Nolan's vision?
We already know that Christopher Nolan will be helping the project as an consultant and most likely won't be directing because of his involvement with The Dark Knight sequel. Bryan Singer could still be involved in the project but it's unlikely he'll be directing with both Jack The Giant Killer and X-Men: First Class on his plate. So I've come up with short list of possible directors.
The Wachowskis: They're my favorite of the group mainly because I'm not sure my mind could handle Nolan-Wachowskis team-up. In Matrix Revolutions the final fight scene between Neo and Agent Smith showed off what could be possible. Warner Bros. has been trying to find the right franchise for two directors. Previously they had interest in making a Plastic Man film.
Matthew Vaughn: Vaughn had been attached to both Thor and X-Men 3 before leaving both projects. He's also insisted on his interest on directing the Avengers. He pitched a rather epic Superman trilogy concept with writer Mark Millar. I think with the help of Nolan it could end up becoming something fresh in the hero genre.
Louis Leterrier: We've been hearing lots of talk of Louis directing Avengers or his campaign for it. Also the possible talk of The Incredible Hulk 2, Marvel Studios has the director for one more film. MTV had some interesting information from their interview with Leterrier. He mentions while working with Legendary Pictures for Clash of The Titans asked about their intentions with Superman and offered his services.
James McTeigue: The Wachowskis' protege impressed a lot of people with V For Vendetta and seems like the perfect director to handle more comic book material. He's currently working on The Raven and I'm sure could be coaxed into making Superman with the supervision of Nolan. McTeigue previously talked to MTV about his thoughts on Superman.
“I think if I was ever going to go near Superman, I would do a complete reboot—take it in a direction that you would absolutely not expect, actually… So, that would be my thinking on it, if I was ever going to go near Superman.”
“I think it’s good that they just had a court case where, basically, if you make another Superman movie, you can’t touch Superman growing up—that’s part of the story that you can’t touch any more… That wouldn’t be a bad thing. I think everybody’s a bit sick of seeing the origin story.”
J.J. Abrams: The biggest long-shot of the group since the only connection to Superman is that Abrams previously wrote an early script for Superman Returns, when Brett Ratner was originally attached. It doesn't hurt that like Nolan he successfully rebooted two franchises. Below is some concept artwork from Phil Sunders which was commissioned for that project.
